In the heyday of jazz in New York the Black musicians performed uptown and the white musicians downtown. One of the few white musicians invited uptown was Anita O’Day. After performing with the Gene Krupa band she went uptown to sing with Billie and Sarah and was considered a member of that elite club of vocalists. However, like Billie Holiday, her career was hampered by her drug habit. However, dope or no dope she is one of the best.
