The Jazz Masters Award was initially presented in 2014 to Clora Bryant. It recognizes women who have paved a way for the next generation of artists and are living legends who continue to blaze the trail for the next generation of women in the arts and jazz in particular.

Clora Bryant

The presentation of the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival inaugural Jazz Legend Award went to a woman who has been a leader and distinguished contributor to the world of jazz since she began her career in the 1940’s, trumpeter Clora Bryant. A musical pioneer, Bryant was the only female trumpeter known to collaborate with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. She played a critical role in carving a place for women instrumentalists in the male-dominated world of jazz. Bryant has had a long and remarkable career, from swinging with the Sweethearts of Rhythm to being one of the last living musicians of the Be-Bop jazz era. Clora Bryant blazed a trail for women in jazz.
